Yes, looking at the above topic, how many of us do really care to protect our Forest Reserve? How many of us know the real meaning of the word “Forest Reserve?” Forests Reserve as the name implies, is a natural area of land set apart for land (forests) and animals to live in a habitat without potentially harmed, due to development or for so whatever reasons!
Malaysia is a land with her beautiful Virgin forests but it seems that none do appreciate this God given nature to man. Our Forests, the symbol of of Malaysia’s green and verdant land, are sliding steadily into depletion! The flora and fauna which this forests sustain are also in jeopardy. If measures are not taken to protect the Forests Reserve from deforestation, then sad to say that the vision that will greet our eyes in the year 2020 will only be of a desolate and denuded Malaysia! It will only be a long stretch of monotonous plantation or an industrial wasteland.
Being a Perakian not by birth, the Segari Melintang Forests Reserve has become of great importance to me. Thanks to both En Meor Razak a field officer from SAM and En Afandi Ahmad the Sec-Gen from KUASA(Persatuan Aktivis Sahabat Alam Perak) who really educated me on the issues and importance of preserving the Segari Melintang Forest Reserve.
Some may ask me, “so what is so important about Segari Melintang Forest Reserve?” Ok, let me start it from here! Segari Melintang Forest Reserve is situated in Segari, in the District of Manjung. There are two Permanent Forest Reserve in Segari under case study by Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM) that is Tanjung Hantu Forest Reserve and Segari Melintang Forest Reseve. There are also several Permanent Forest Reserve in the surrounding of Segari and closer to Forest Reserve Tanjung Hantu and Forest Rerserve Segari Melintang such as Forest Reserve Tanjung Burung,Forest Reserve Gunung Tunggal,Forest Reserve Teluk Kopiah,Forest Reserve Kota Siam and Forest Reserve Batu Undan. These Reserve Forest are a home to many different kind of species of animals!
Our forests sustains an enormous variety of animals and plant life. New species continued to be discovered on a regular basis.Scientists engaging in taxonomical studies are in a race against rapid deforestation and habitat degradation. A principle fact in Malaysia’s environmental crisis is that we are often not certain of full extent of the biological diversity we are destroying. We just do not care!
Destruction of forests can threaten the survival of many species which are confined entirely to a particular area. Continuous encroachment on their habitats may force forests species into ever smaller ranges, threatening their reproductive capability, perhaps leading to their extinction within our own lifetime.
How aware are we that the Segari Melintang Forest Reserve is the home for different species of rats and that we have High Conservation Value Forests (HCVF) that are endemic to Malaysia? Take a look at the species of rats that are found in the Segari Melintang Forest Reserve.
Have we ever thought what will happen if we are to go on encroaching their habitats? Where will these species of rats and other animals that have made their homes in the Forest Reserve flee to? Let us be more aware and sensitive to all the living creatures that are in this Forest Reserve. Help us to Save the Forest Reserve from destruction and developments of human hands that are not suppose to take place here where they are categorized as an Environmentally Sensitive area rank 1 and 2(ESA), and it is only meant for conservation and no development is allowed in this area except for ecotourism and ecorelated development. Let us do our part by saving these Forest Reserve by bringing awareness to others through forums and social media. Let us value what we have and not regret when all is gone!
